Meet our fishing family

Otto Strobel
Otto has been fishing the BC coast for over 40 years.  During that time, Otto was a high school chemistry teacher at Penticton High School and, for 20 years, owned and operated an apple orchard in Summerland, and fished his summers on the family gillnetter.
Lavonne Strobel
Lavonne is Otto’s wife.  She has been fishing with Otto for over 30 years.
Eldorado is the family Gillnetter.  She is 35 feet long.
Boris is Otto and Lavonne’s Portuguese Water Dog.  He loves fishing and is always on (or in!) the water with the Strobels.
Shaun Strobel
Shaun is Otto’s son.  He began fishing with his father when he was only 7 years old.  Dismayed at the dwindling salmon fishing fleet in the wake of the big business Seine fleet and fish farms, Shaun wrote an M.A. thesis at SFU on the labour history of fishing in BC. Shaun is a high school Social Studies teacher.  He also teaches SCUBA diving and is a technical diver.
Sonia Tilley Strobel
Sonia is Shaun’s wife.  She grew up in Burnaby, BC, and began helping out with the family fishing business in 2000.
Oliver Strobel
Oliver is the son of Sonia and Shaun, the grandson of Otto and Lavonne.  He first went out on Eldorado when he was just 3 months old.  Oliver loves water and boats and hopes to be a fisherman when he grows up, carrying on the family CSF!
Leanne Strobel and Simon Rabinovich
Leanne is Otto’s daughter and Simon is her husband.  Leanne and Simon love salmon and spending time on the fish boat!
